INDICATION
It is used for treatment of congestive cardiomyopathy, pulmonary oedema, hypercalciuric nephropathy, uremia and adjunctive therapy in hyperkalemia & occasionally as an antihypertensive agent.
In Cattle it is used for the treatment of post parturient udder edema & associated structures. In race Horses, it helps to prevent or to reduce epistaxis (exercise included pulmonary hemorrhage).
CONTRAINDICATION
Do not use the product in cases of acute glomerular nephritis, renal failure with anuria, electrolyte deficiency diseases or over dosage with digitalis.
Do not use concurrently with amino glycoside antibiotic treatment.
SIDE EFFECTS
Furosemide cause dehydration, volume depletion, hypokalemia and hyponatremia, which may be excessive and detrimental.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Furosemide inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the thick, ascending loop of henle, resulting in loss of sodium, chloride and water in to the urine. Furosemide induces beneficial hemodynamic effects prior to the onset of diuresis. Vasodilation increases renal blood flow, thereby increasing renal perfusion and lessening fluid retention. It appears that renal vasodilation depends on the synthesis of local prostaglandins.
